I hate my school for having this stupid, outdated “no cellphone” rule.

EDIT: For the record, I own a Samsung GT-E1200, like this.

I find that school phone policies, at least in my opinion, should kinda work like this:

a. Phone usage allowed at designated break times (e.g. snack and lunch), but if people abuse this and think it’s ok to use them in class, then no phones.

b. If the teachers are engaging and fun to be around, then you probably are going to pay attention to them and not need your phone.

Back in my day we didn’t have cell phones in school. Okay, not really but not everyone had a smartphone (or a plain slider/candy bar phone for others).

I still have professors who take away phones, and I’m a grad student.

I have to put my phone in a locker before I go into work. I think not having a phone is amazing. I don’t want an email/phone/beeper/anything.

Some employers consider termination after catching an employee using a phone during working hours multiple times.

Well, my college doesn’t care much whether you bother with one. Besides, Microsoft Office Lens is pretty useful for those moments when you realise that you have no chance of copying down everything on the whiteboard in time.

Some of my former high school alumni insist that the ban was what made phone use fun. I’ll never quite understand that lot...

You’re there to learn so you can do something more with your life than make minimum wage (or complain about how unfair life is that you can only male the minimum wage). If you were using one during school, then you’d be stealing an opportunity from not only yourself, but any of your fellow students who are distracted by the usage or who may also be using because their acquaintances are.

The phone ban is reasonable. If you think you need one for emergencies, get one of those $20 “candy bar” Nokia/Microsoft phones (200- or 300-series, not their Lumia line) that can go a month without charging and keep it in your locker or bag.

That’s why I have a basic Samsung phone! (Forgot the model, but it ain’t a Galaxy)

Plus, the only time I would use my phone is after school contacting my fetcher.

Well, times have changed. I’ve heard a lot of news around my country for criminal activities like stolen items or kidnappings. I’m using cellphones just to give my a sense of security when I look for my parents or fetcher outside of school grounds.

Most probably because the mobile phone wasn’t prevailing in the public.

Of course, it’s a distraction when you’re in class or work, but once you’re outside, it’s something needed when trouble arises.

Probably a good thing in the long run. In reality watever is on the phone probably isn’t as important as learning.

But life outside of school is dangerous where I’m from. Kidnappings, hold-ups, etc. are almost common in Manila. The phone is there to keep in touch with the authorities I need to contact in dire situations like those.

He may be referring to a policy similar to the one at my middle school - no phones at all, ever, not even lunch or in between classes. That is a dumb policy.

cant you have the phone off at school then turn it on when you are leaving?

That’s my opinion too. Middle school completely blocked use of them, which was stupid, high school technically only allowed them on breaks, but kids still use them during class in the back row.

Its still a rule. An overarching good one considering the age range. I wouldn’t care if the students in a certain class were all in the running to be Rhodes scholars 4.0 GPA; no phones. Because in their case, they have aspirations for world changing **** and I don’t want the next Einstein to get their train of thought broken by a emoji text. :P
